Will the EU Allow Toxic Chemicals to be Labeled Green?

There seems to be a trend to backtrack on sustainability, and a piece of draft legislation from the EU in Brussels is the latest example.

If approved, the legislation would allow thousands of substances to be categorized as sustainable, even with well-documented concerns about their effects on health.

Included in the substances is TFA, a PFAS “forever chemical”, the build-up of which in drinking water is a major concern for fears it can damage the health of unborn children.

“By loosening the controls on hazardous pollution in this way, the European Commission is ignoring its Green Deal pledge to do no significant harm to human health and the environment. In so doing, it is also destabilising the investment environment and therefore putting economic growth at risk.”

The proposed changes are part of a plan to simplify the EU’s green process and, hopefully, boost economic growth.

Industry lobbying groups support the proposed legislation because labeling more substances as sustainable would allow for access to sustainable investment in the EU.
