Proposed Front of Pack Nutrition Labeling

The FDA has recently introduced a proposed rule covering nutrition labeling that must be printed on the front of packages.

The idea is to make it easier for consumers to choose healthy options when food shopping – rather than having to check out the full nutrition info on the back of packages.

The proposed label is a simplified version of the full nutritional label, showing clearly if a product is high in saturated fat, sodium and sugars – helping consumers avoid foods that can contribute to health problems.

Front of pack (or FOP) is already in use in some countries, but if this proposed rule comes into, it will be an important breakthrough in the US.

I think this is a great idea that should have been implemented years ago.

It will allow consumers to see beyond the (sometimes misleading) marketing messages on food packaging and allow them to quickly and easily compare foods to see which will be the most healthy option.

The proposal is currently available for comments from interested parties – I’m sure food manufacturers will have some thoughts on this.
