Three things always stand out for me when it comes to coffee pods for Keurig-type machines:
- They are super convenient
- The coffee produced is generally not very good
- The used plastic pods are a sustainability nightmare.

New England Coffee, based in Malden, Mass, is looking to redress the balance and has switched to plant-based compostable materials for their latest pod design.
“New England Coffee’s new single-serve pods bring bigger flavor and leave a smaller footprint, without changing your at-home coffee routine.”
~ Jim Kaloyanides, General Manager of New England Coffee
I’ve used those mesh pods in the past, and they do seem to produce better-tasting coffee than the original plastic ones. Some of that might be because they tend to be used by more craft-oriented brands that roast higher-quality coffee in the first place.
In any event, getting to be more sustainable can only be a good thing, and if you want to try out New England Coffee’s products, you can order them here: New England Coffee Pods
