It’s that time of year when color control company Pantone announces their choice for color of the year.
Pantone has been doing this for more than twenty years, and the color for 2023 is Vivia Magenta, Pantone #18-1750.
Rooted in the primordial, PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta reconnects us to original matter. Invoking the forces of nature, PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta galvanizes our spirit, helping us to build our inner strength.Leatrice Eiseman – Pantone Color Institute
It’s a nice enough color, but I’m a little disappointed. After Pantone had posted an image with the Pantone reference numbers of the Pride rainbow flag, I had rather hoped that rainbow might have been the color for 2023 – especially since the World Cup was currently taking place in homophobe Qatar.
But that’s not one color, you might think. No problem, Pantone has had more one one color in the Color of the Year before now.
Alas it wasn’t the case. I’m not good with predictions.
What’s the point in all of this?
Well, it does create some interest in the design community and we’ll be seeing some Viva Magenta themed products appear over the next few months. There is already a collection of suitable merch available for purchase on the Pantone site it you can’t wait, including Viva Magenta versions of Pantone’s hideously expensive color tile chips.
Do you use Microsoft Teams in your business? You’ll be aware that Microsoft incorporated backgrounds themed around last year’s Pantone color – I’m wondering if we’ll be seeing some Viva Magenta-themed versions in 2023.
Of course, it would be nice if Microsoft was to improve its fake greenscreen algorithm simultaneously – it’s annoying having to look at someone using the current fade-in and fade-out version.
Finally after removing the Pantone color swatches from the Adobe suite earlier this year, Pantone must be happy to have a little good PR, after annoying a lot of people in the design community.
What do you think? Like the color or is it a waste of time?
