NFC Tags Provide Extra Security Against Counterfeits

Pharma label specialist Schreiner MediPharm has introduced a new Near-Field Communication (NFC) based label concept to help protect packages containing EpiPens and other injectables and defeat counterfeiting and tampering.

With EpiPens and other self-injected medications becoming more common, this new label system allows the end customer to be certain that the product they are about to inject is genuine and has not been tampered with.

The NFC label contains an integrated chip with encoded data that is encrypted against manipulation.

Most smartphones, including iPhones and Android phones, can read data from NFC tags. To initiate reading the data, the patient simply holds their phone against the package.

Because the label is applied around the cap and the body of the package, the NFC chip can detect if the label is damaged when the package is opened and report this to the user.

The system can assure that the product is genuine and unopened and provide instructions for using the injector.

This is a great solution using technology to help make medicines safe for patients.
