New TTO Printer from Domino

Thermal Transfer Overprinter (TTO) devices are frequently used to print variable information – text, barcode, graphics, etc. – onto flexible packaging.

The technology was introduced to the packaging industry in the 1980s and has been constantly refined by printer OEMs producing this kind of printer.

The latest TTO printer to join the competition is the Vx350i from Domino.

Since Domino acquired Danish printer manufacturer Easy Print in the mid-2000s, all of the TTO printers in the line have been updated except the top-level, high-volume model, the V320i.

This version had remained basically the original design and was undoubtedly ready to be replaced.

The new printer is designed to operate in continuous and intermittent motion modes and is entirely electronic, with no compressed air needed.

Having a history with the previous generation printer, I know removing the need for factory air will be a welcome upgrade for people who must maintain the printers.

The printer uses a 300dpi, 53mm wide printhead and can print at speeds up to 1,200mm/sec in continuous mode when using Domino’s enhanced pack. (no, I don’t know what that is, but I’ll find out 😀)

The new ribbon cassette design is another update that will please users and technicians.

It’s lighter than the previous model and is now dancer-arm-free.

This will make threading ribbon a lot easier and technicians won’t have to worry about dancer arm spring tensions that could be tricky to set up.

Regarding the printing ribbons, Domino says the maximum roll length is 1,200m (depending on the type of ribbon used), and the recommended width is 34 or 55mm.

The new printer also includes Domino’s ribbon-saving techniques, which can reduce the amount of ribbon used, extending the time between roll replenishment and helping keep costs down.

Washdown environment? The optional washdown cover provides the printer unit with IP55 environmental protection.

Who is the Vx350i For?

As Domino’s highest-rated TTO printer, this new model is intended for applications that require high-quality print on labels and flexible packaging on high-volume packaging lines.

I can see it being used on packaging lines for medical products, where it will be well-suited for UDI barcodes, serialization, and applications that require GS1-compliant variable barcodes.
