Inkjet printing using Piezo-type printheads (PIJ) is well established for printing barcodes and other information onto corrugated secondary packaging.
With shelf-ready packaging becoming more common, where the secondary packaging is used as part of the retail store display, brands are looking for their secondary packaging to have more shelf appeal.
This often means that the corrugated material is coated to allow for color graphics, making it unsuitable for printing with many PIJ printers.

To address this, Domino has introduced the new Cx150i, a PIJ printer system that uses UV-cured inks suitable for printing coated non-porous surfaces.
This capability makes the Cx150i capable of adding text, GS1-compliant barcodes and graphics to shelf-ready packaging, wine and spirits cases and other packages.
Two versions of the Cx150i printer are available, one with a maximum print height of 32.5mm and one that can print up to 65mm high.
The UV-cured inks are supplied in an innovative flexible pouch, and the prints are cured using low-power UV lamps.
“In today’s fast-paced, consumer-driven world, brands are increasingly looking to stand out and increase shelf appeal. This is driving a move away from plain, brown cardboard towards branded non-porous substrates for shelf-ready and display packaging.
With non-porous packaging, code durability can be an issue, particularly where food-contact materials are concerned. Compliant solutions often fall short of expectations regarding legibility and durability and can be wasteful in terms of overall ink and energy usage. We have developed the Cx150i with exactly these considerations in mind.”
