While CO2 lasers are the most common for packaging applications, they are not ideal for printing on every type of material.
Some packaging substrates, including certain films and plastics such as HDPE (high-density polyethylene), don’t produce an acceptable contrast level when attempting to print with CO2 lasers but do respond very well to lasers in the UV part of the spectrum.

Laser coding specialist Macsa ID recently launched the SPA2 Nano UV, a new addition to its line of UV lasers.
This compact 5W UV laser coder is specifically designed to produce a high-quality mark on materials that are difficult for other types of laser to handle. The marking is accomplished using less power than traditional lasers, meaning that the material being printed is less likely to distort or discolor, allowing for very high-quality text and barcodes.
For brands looking to print high-quality 2D barcodes on products or packaging, the Nano UV is an interesting, sustainable alternative to traditional printing methods.
The Nano UV uses the same interfaces as the other lasers from Macsa for quick installation and easy training.
Macsa will exhibit at Pack Expo International in November at booth LL-10419 (the lower level in the Lakeside Center), where you can check out the Nano UV and the other Macsa lasers.
