MSM Solutions, a traceability solutions integrator, has announced the launch of PortalTrack Print IQ, a software platform that adds barcode validation and label inspection to industrial label printers.
The system integrates Zebra Technologies’ fixed industrial scanners with MSM’s PortalTrack software to provide continuous validation during production.
The platform uses AI-powered tools and anomaly detection to validate 1D and 2D barcodes and human-readable text. If the system detects a defect, it can trigger an instant printer interlock to prevent unreadable labels from entering the supply chain. This capability aims to reduce the risks associated with downstream scanning or sampling in sectors such as healthcare, manufacturing, and logistics.
The software supports evolving requirements like GS1 2D codes and Digital Product Passports by ensuring label accuracy at the point of print. It also provides APIs for integration with ERP, WMS, or other host systems, allowing real-time data and compliance logs to be fed back into enterprise software.
According to MSM Solutions, the technology has already been deployed internally in their service bureau, which processes 40,000 labels per day, while customers are currently conducting pilot validations in their own facilities.
The launch addresses the growing need for automated verification as regulatory and industry standards for digital product identities become more stringent.
My Thoughts
Over the years, I’ve worked with many different inspection systems that bolt onto thermal label printers. These range from simple linear scanners that check encoded data in linear barcodes to imaging scanners that can also perform rudimentary inspection of 2D codes.
Today, with more capable scanners and AI-assisted image processing, this system from MSM Solutions aims to provide a better way to help companies maintain label compliance and quality for logistics and other applications, while also enabling data upload to other processes.
