Companies Team Up for Sustainable Packaging

As brands continue to move towards more sustainable and recyclable packaging, many are looking towards fiberboard made from recycled materials as part of this concept.

This is fine, but when the product needs to have a barrier layer in the package, ensuring recyclability becomes more a challenge.

Italian companies, fiberboard manufacturer RDM Group, and sustainable film producer Ecopol have collaborated on a new solution that could help solve this dilemma.

Combining RDM Groups’ sustainable fiberboard with water-soluble and compostable polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) film for the liner yields a fiberboard package that meets the requirements of upcoming EU circularity rules and those that will follow.

Ecopol’s PVOH film is a transparent, water-soluble and biodegradable polymer.  In addition to being biodegradable, it is also effective as a barrier laminate. This makes it ideal for applications where the product is sensitive to aromas and for extending shelf life. It can also be resistant to oxygen, grease, moisture and oils, making it suitable for use with many types of products, including food.

Package Examples Using RDM Group Materials

“By pairing our functional barrier film with RDM Group’s board, we will create packaging that’s not only functional, but fully recyclable. This will be a true step forward in eliminating virgin plastic waste and making sustainable solutions the new standard.”

Mauro Bonfiglio, Vice President of Sales & Marketing – Ecopol

“This pioneering collaboration is an example of the new, cross-industry links that need to be created to meet the demands of the PPWR,” says “Our goal is to create a more sustainable, recycling-friendly material of the future to drive increased circularity.

We are now looking for brands and converters to develop new types of packaging using this new PVOH-based solution, and invite potential partners to start projects with us.”
