Chemicals in Our Food Supply

First Published: March 6, 2024

The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has a lot of responsibilities related to ensuring our food and pharmaceutical products are safe.

One of them is keeping track of chemicals used in the food supply, whether for additives, coloring, packaging materials, or other purposes.

After a product is launched, the agency is always looking for new information that might signal a need to reevaluate its safety—quite often, this kind of thing could be launched by a petition, or perhaps new scientific data becomes available.

The FDA recently published a listing of twenty-one substances currently under investigation. All of them have previously been assessed and cleared as generally recognized as safe, but they are now being reexamined as additional information becomes available.

You can access the FDA page to view the list and in addition, download an infographic of the FDA’s review process.
