A New Sustainable Option for Coffee Packaging – EcoVerHighPlus

Over the last few years, flexible packaging has been moving towards new materials to improve sustainability. Packaging for whole bean and ground coffee has been lagging somewhat, with most coffee bags continuing to be made from laminated films that are difficult to recycle because they involve multiple different materials.

A new solution from flexible packaging manufacturer Constantia Flexibles, EcoVerHighPlus, is a mono-polypropylene (PP) laminate engineered to provide the barrier performance needed for roasted coffee while also being easy to recycle.

The solution also includes a mono-propylene one-way valve that allows gases from the roasting process to escape, while keeping external gases out, helping to ensure the aroma and freshness of the coffee.

“This project highlights the positive impact of close collaboration. Thanks to our partnership with Delica AG we have successfully launched one of the first recyclable-ready mono PP laminates for coffee soft bags on the market. This represents a meaningful step forward for both the industry and the environment.”

Swiss company Delica is the first to use the new EcoVerHighPlus material for packaging its roasted coffee brands, such as Café Royal.

As an enthusiast of both coffee and packaging (and part owner of a family coffee roaster), it’s nice to see this level of sustainable packaging in the coffee industry. Hopefully, there will be more sustainable options available for small roasters before too long. I’d love to see Future Classic Coffee packed in this kind of material.
